The Bouche of Bonifacio

Established as a joint effort between France and Italy the Bouche de Bonifacio National park was established in order to protect the flora and fauna form the Strait of Bonifacio. It aims to find a mid way in the fight between the protection of the natural environment and marine human activities such as fishing diving and aquaculture.

 
Already the effects of the natural reservation are being felt in the area. Legal protection has been applied, with the set up of restrictive fishing spots and the introduction of protective by-laws. But there is still much work left to be done. Goals such as diminishing the impact of the intense shipping activity and promotion of tourism in a controlled manner are still on the agenda.

 
The marine park now has strict regulations that manage activities such as diving, over and underwater fishing, introduction of non native species and the access of pedestrians and vehicles across the area. And it’s these rules that will help protect and conserve the life-filled waters of this mid-Mediterranean jewel.
